Some services like gmail allow you to have multiple emails by using a period or plus sign, I think but I would never use gmail for much serious.
Every MTA/Mailserver I've dealt with supports the + separator, seems also to be part of
RFC5233 for sieve filtering.
Of course pro scammers will just cut the part from the + to the @ out to appear legit, but it definitely helps to see who lost your address when you get spammed.
Still, using a separate alias for every service you use is better if you have that possibility, like with your own domain etc.
