Do you think it's right to reference to others as a yardstick to evaluate your level of responsible gambling?
Measuring gambling health by comparing ownself to other gamblers is as reasonable as measuring your lung health by looking at the worst smoker in your neighborhood. Your colleague is lying to himself because the truth is unpleasant to hear. You're on the right way by emphasizing self-evaluation, not peer comparison. If he continues to hold himself to that standard, he'll add to the list of examples he uses to feel better… until he himself joins the list.
I don't know how you can effectively measure your gambling health by comparing yourself to others when we all agree that gambling is an individual deal that you are supposed to make your decision based on your peculiarities. We have different income sources and income levels, so what I can gamble with may be what another will be aiming to win so why do I have to compare my gambling with another? This is not ideal, simply find your way around gambling, limiting your activities to what you can afford to lose.
