To me, this seems like a very reckless and risky move. If your friend needed money, then gambling at a casino at that moment was extremely dangerous. What would have happened if he had lost? There are always plenty of other sources where you can obtain money, so to say that this person did the right thing is highly doubtful. Moreover, others will learn from such foolish actions, thinking that the miracle your friend prayed for will come to them, too. So, use your brain when you're on the brink of despair, and always consider both options, not just the good ones, but the bad ones as well.
Even if it is life and death situation, it is still a reckless move? Friends mother was on the brink of death. At such moment, I dont think that anyone is able to think rationally, and have time to properly think about every possible way and choose the best. His friend saw a chance and used it. I think he has done because he had no time and had to make decision quickly. Otherwise he would have borrowed, pawn or sold something.
I think it was situation when 1) you get involved in huge risk and win 2) you risk and lose, and its a double loss, because you lose mother and money. But if he hasnt taken that risk, he would "lose" anyway.
