To me, this seems like a very reckless and risky move. If your friend needed money, then gambling at a casino at that moment was extremely dangerous. What would have happened if he had lost? Moreover, others will learn from such foolish actions, thinking that the miracle your friend prayed for will come to them, too. I think it was situation when 1) you get involved in huge risk and win 2) you risk and lose, and its a double loss, because you lose mother and money. But if he hasnt taken that risk, he would "lose" anyway.

If that wasnt that urgent, I would calmly go online and check where I could borrow with lowest interest rate. If I was to chose to lose money or to lose life, I would risk with money.
It is not about gambling or money, but I had experience when doctor ask (more correct to say shock you) a question and wait for decision, that will make a huge influence on patient, your and people who surround him, life. You cant take a pause and tell that you need to think about it.
